Home Made Lovely

Home Made Lovely by Shannon Acheson is a beautiful how to for decorating tips, tricks and ideas. Shannon offers basic, realistic decorating ideas as well as simple hospitality ideas. There are several pages for journaling/woking out your ideas. There are also quite a few photo pages that illustrate ideas. Shannon keeps the ideas (mostly) simply for those new to interior decorating, but also has some great tips for those who have experience.

All in all, I found the book informative and helpful. Interior decorating is not necessarily something I am good at, but did find the tips helpful and inspiring.  I think the best (and my favorite) quote from the book was at the end where Shannon shared, "....the kitchen will become messy every since day if you're doing life right."

I was given a free copy from the publisher for my honest review. I would recommend this book!

Engaging Your Teen's World by David Easton and Jeremiah Callihan

Engaging Your Teen's World by David Eaton & Jeremiah Callihan is an excellent resource for anyone who knows a teen! This book, which comes from the founders of Axis, a ministry which helps parents and teenagers understand each other in teen culture.

The book is divided into parts. The first part is the why behind engaging in teen culture. The second part is the how and finally the actual teen topics. However, as with any book (and the authors share this), any dated material immediatly can become irrelevant after print. BUT this book offers some great why and then touches on the actual topics.

This book is informative for anyone who works with teens or knows a teen!  I found it relevant to parents, grandparents, youth pastors and anyone who seeks to understand teen culture better. There is valuable insight shared in this book.

I was given a free copy for the publisher for my honest review. The book comes highly recommended from me for parents of and those who know children ages 8 to 18.

The Escape by Lisa Harris

The Escape by Lisa Harris is the first book in the U.S. Marshals series.  U.S. Marshal Madison James is still reeling from the loss of her husband five years ago. She has finally decided to move on literally and move out of town.  Only she has one last assignment in town.  Jonas Quinn is back in town and has been asked to
out help with this special assignment. It's great to see Madison, who he trained four years ago. This assignment should be a simply prisoner transport.  However, it doesn't turn out so simple.

In true Lisa Harris style, The Escape will have you page turning! I throughly enjoyed the story and simply couldn't put the book down In fact, now that I'm finished with the book, I'm still trying to figure out how the escaped prisoner did what he did.  The only unfortunate part is that there is a cliffhanger at the end, so you'll have to check out the next book in the series!

The Escape was an enjoyable, suspenseful read. I would recommend this book! I was given a free copy form the publisher for my honest review, which I was happy to do!

Softly Blows the Bugle by Jan Drexler

Softly Blows the Bugle by Jan Drexler is an enthralling and captivating historical Amish fiction.  This is the second book I've read by Jan and I think it's even better than the first! Historical Amish fiction was a new genre for me until I've read Jan's works, and it is a great read!

Elizabeth knows that she will never amount to anything as a result of her abusive marriage to the late Englisher, Reuben.  In fact, she does not want to marry ever again. When her brother Jonas returns from the Civil War, and brings along a Confederate solider, Aaron, Elizabeth is worried and fearful. Harder still is that Aaron lost his leg in the war.  But soon Solomon arrives in town. Wow, he is everything Elizabeth is looking for, or rather wasn't looking for, in a husband.

Softly Blows the Bugle is a captivating tale. In fact, I couldn't put it down!  I enjoyed the story and all that happened in the book.  The historical fiction was an added bonus to the storyline. I was given a free copy from the publisher for my honest review, which I was happy to do! I would recommend this book!

Finding Quiet by Jamie Grace

Finding Quiet by Jamie Grace...first if you don't know who Jamie Grace is, find out. You will love her personality. She was a You Tube star long before You Tube was as popular as it is today.  I mean, after all, she invited everyone to her wedding!  We have loved and adored Jamie Grace ever since her hit Hold Me. We have seen her in concert, met her in a "fan line" and watched her in a movie.  My daughters have looked up to her and her instagram stories are entertaining.

In Finding Quiet, Jamie shares some of her struggles throughout life, including being in the spotlight at a young age, her mother's health issues, waiting on God's timing for her husband, and her Tourette's Syndrome. Jamie is honest in her journey and shares much of it.

Jamie also shares how to tackle and have grace in many of those challenges. How to seek Christ and how to live for Him in this loud world. Jamie's situation may not be like yours, but she offers practical advice and tips on how to think of creative ways to go through such situations.

Yes, I'm older than Jamie and have lived more life, but her thoughts, ideas and perspectives were valuable and insightful.  I was given a free copy of Finding Quiet from the publisher for my honest review, which I was happy to do. I would recommend this book!

A Different Kind of Post...

Today's post is a different kind. Not even sure if I'll publish it....or who will read it.

But I've been pondering. In between books that I read. Yes, this blog has been overtaken with book reviews. But I am so thankful for publishers and authors. It is a JOY to read and review books.

So back to pondering.....

We just came through a "season" of quarantine.  I mean March 2020 until about August 2020 where we were home (entire family). And we were all together.  It was hard. But in some ways it was also oh so good.  All my kids at home. The summer before we had struggled just to find 15 minutes together. All together. And that happened to be in a Chick-fil-a. (Not gonna lie, no better place to gather!)  But it was such a struggle.

Then COVID hit. First I felt so guilty. So guilty for all my kids were missing. Their disappointments. What they were missing. How it wasn't supposed to be this way.  We weathered the valley of disappointments. We even had slips of paper on the dining room table to fill out "what you want to do when out of quarantine."

I had very sweet times of Bible study. I would wake up early and read my Bible. I spent my days at home. I even found two online (zoom) Bible studies. It was so sweet. I had ladies that I would actually "see" via Zoom. We would check in and although our relationships were not deep we did Bible study together. It was good.

Then life kind of went back to normal. Sort of. Of the five kids the two college students missed their sports seasons. But at least they had practice.

And I went back to normal. Back to the busy. Back to the running after kids. Back to the sports events (at least three times a week, many weeks more than that.) Back to church. Back to my sweet Moms in Prayer time. Back to substitute teaching. Back to it all.

And now I'm wondering, where are those sweet times? Those sweet Bible studies? Where does one go to connect with those sweet in person Bible studies? Do they exist? How does one go about that in the midst of COVID? Are we so busy doing that we don't have time to be?  {Most would say that church, just to clarify my church offers one women's Bible study.}

As we appear to be entering another shut down, will we be back to the online? What have we learned from this time? How can we invest more in others? How can I? Who will invest in those who are leading and need someone to invest in them? How can we have Christian women wave the flag and let others know they need some help? Or, do we just go on as we have been?

Our Daily Question ~ Celebrating Our Love, Laughs, and Life Together

Our Daily Questions ~ Three Year Journal for Couples is a unique and fun journal! I appreciate the concept of this type of journal! You answer one question each day. The next year you answer the same question and see if you answer is the same or different than the year before. This concludes with the following (third) year.  This journal is unique in that it is for couples. This creates a daily time for couples to connect and reflect each day.

Quesitons include "What is the last inspirational material you read?" "Would you rather have close friends or one best friend?" and "What is your current go to recipe when hosting friends?"

I appreciate this beautiful, simple, yet elegant journal.  This would make a great daily date for couples and a great gift to couples. (Think wedding!) Buy one for your self and one as a gift!

I was given a free copy from the publisher for my honest review, which I was happy to do. I would recommend this book!

The Key to Love by Betsy St Amant is the fun story of Bri. Bri loves to bake and can’t wait to meet her perfect mate. Awakening Wonder by Sally Clarkson

Awakening Wonder by Sally Clarkson is a book about her journey through the homeschool years and her very accomplished four children. In Awakening Wonder,  Sally shares tips and ideas that she used during homeschool journey of her children. As I said all of her children are very accomplished. I had never read anything by Sally so I was very excited to read this book.

I must say it was a rather unusual book to read, because Sally focuses on many idealistic opportunities. I’m not sure how many are realistic. If you are looking for a book for the average family or homeschool family this book might not be for you. Sally seems to come out rather strong with her perceptions and concerns against public school or anything other than homeschooling. Honestly I was a little put off by her narrow focus. I was given a free copy from the publisher for my honest review which I was happy to do.

Reach Out Gather In by Karen Ehman

Reach Out Gather In by Karen Ehman is a book of 40 days to opening your heart and home, but it's SO much more! I have loved Karen's work and enjoy reading her books. I have also read many books on hospitality but found that Reach Out Gather In is so much more!

Reach Out Gather In is set up to be read as one devotional per day. I, however, was so moved by the book I read it continuously.  There is a space for journaling along the way, as well as part Bible study depending on the day.  Karen also shares the gift of her famous recipes throughout the book.  Karen shares many of her personal stories as well. This book is real and offers inspiration for women today.

I found that this book also challenged me in an unexpected way.  It challenged me to think about my goals, dreams and aspirations.  I confess, I was not expecting that from a book about hospitality! That's what the book is so much more.  I highly recommend this book, not only for personal reflection, inspiration, Bible study and ideas, but also as a gift for anyone who may want to explore those same ideas. I also quickly found myself highlighting and starring ideas in the book!

I was given a free copy from the publisher for my honest review, which I was happy to do.  I highly recommend Reach Out Gather In. This book is a gem!

Point of Danger by Irene Hannon

Point of Danger by Irene Hannon is a gripping novel of Eve Reilly, conservative radio host.  Eve is finds herself in an unusual set of circumstances as she has recently been threatened by a bomb.  Law enforcement sends over a new detective, Brent.  Brent grows concerned for Eve as the story develops, both as a detective and a friend, or maybe even more?  Eve realizes that she is also connecting with Brent in a deeper way, something her sisters pick up on as well. Who is out to get Eve? Will the police be able to stop the threats or worse a real attack? Why threaten this conservative talk show host?

Point of Danger is a thrilling novel that will keep you hooked. It is enjoyable and the characters are fun to follow, and may just touch on a bit of real life today! I was given a free copy from the publisher for my honest review, which I was happy to do!

Prevail by Susie Larson

Prevail by Susie Larson is a wonderful resource and encouragement. This 365 day devotional offers a scripture verse, a paragraph or two of insight, a portion of the Bible to read (just the scripture reference, not included), thought provoking questions and a brief prayer.  The scripture to read is either a chapter or less. There are many topics covered in the devotional. At the beginning there is a list of all topics and days that they are covered.

This devotional provides encouragement for women and biblical insight. It is a fabulous resource and would make a great gift. If you are looking for encouragement on a bar idea topics I would recommend picking up Prevail.

I was given a free copy from the publisher for my honest review. I would recommend this book. I was happy to review it.

Until I Met You by Tari Faris

Until I Met You by Tari Faris is part of the Restoring Heritage Series. Libby arrives in town as the new librarian. She comes with a past that is difficult and has many hurts to overcome. All the sudden, she meets this rude Austin Williams, who is  working on the town square project. Brandon, the local pastor,  is Austin's brother. Why don't Brandon and Austin get along? What happened in their past that is so difficult to overcome? Fortunately Libby finds Olivia as her new roommate. But why does Brandon keep Olivia at arm's length?

I did enjoy this story, but do need to mention that sometimes the characters were confusing.  I would have liked to see a character list at the beginning.  There are several other books in this series. I think reading the first few would have helped me understand the story as well.  All in all, it was enjoyable and I would recommend this book.  I was given a free copy for my honest review!

Something Worth Doing

Something Worth Doing by Jane Kirkpatrick is the telling tale is Abigail Jane Scott Duniway.  Abigail (sometimes called Jenny) is the well know women’s rights suffragist.  Abigail worked with Susan B. Anthony and many others.

While fiction, Something Worth Doing, features many accurate and true details of Abigail’s life. This book does add some creativity to the story. It was very informative and interesting to learn the history of Abigail’s  life.

This book does go in spirts of  sharing  Abigail’s daily life and then moving along a number of years to another event.  I did enjoy this story and would recommend especially for those who want to learn more about the history of women’s rights.

I was given a free copy from the publisher for my honest review which I was happy to do.

How Was Your Day?

Ever ask your child, "how was your day?" Especially the very first day of school? When you want to know ALL about it? And all your child says, is "good".  Or "fine".

Well, I was tired of it and wanted to know more! So, I created a family friendly contest to help my husband and I out!

Now, this will work better with kids who can text, BUT you would always make this a paper and pencil project! (Get creative!)

Every first day of school or first day of the semester,  I send out a text in our family group text.  I tell the kids that I am the unfair judge. They will get money if they participate (hey, we all need an incentive). The more they send, or more creative, the more favorable I will be!

We have gotten everything from selfies with the principal, to videos about their day, to most importantly, details we would have never known had I not asked for this/held this contest.

My husband and I are always amazed at what our kids will share and since we've been doing this it has been a joy to hear these details!  We usually do this the first day of the school year and the first day of the second semester (works for college kids too!)  Make sure you put a deadline.

Well, Girl by Jami Amerine

Well, Girl by Jami Amerine is an interesting read. Jami takes us through her journey of self esteem, blame, shame and finally acceptance.  Jami shares her story in a passionate and heartfelt way.  Jami does not share a "tell all" diet, but instead, shares her journey throughout the years, which has included many diets, the blame game, and ultimately healing.

I had never read anything by Jami and did find this book interesting. It was a little all over the place as far as topic, even sharing added material after under revision in the publishing process.  I do think many women will relate to this book and it's content.  This is not just for women who struggle with their weight, but rather all women on acceptance and knowing their identity in Christ.

I found Jami's story interesting. I received a complimentary copy from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

Stand All the Way Up Burn It All Down by Sophie Hudson

Stand All the Way Up: Stories of Staying In It When You Want to Burn It All Down by Sophie Hudson is a great collection of stories written by famous author, better known as BooMama.  Although I had never read anything by BooMama, I did enjoy this book.  Sophie shares stories and humor and tends to "tell it like it is"!

Each chapter features a different topic of encouragement shared by Sophie. She tackles such ideas as friendships, racism, parenting, working and many other aspects of life.  Sophie also takes a hard look at racism and much that is going on in the world today. Sophie tends to share in a relatable and enjoyable way.

I did enjoy this book and would recommend it. I was given a free copy from the publisher for my honest review, which I was happy to do!

The Black Midnight by Kathleen y'Barbo

The Black Midnight is a captivating story of historical fiction.  The Black Midnight starts off in Austin Texas with a string of murders.  Annie is sent to help solve the murders and works with fellow detective, Isaiah.  They are trying to solve the murders and gather information, however, despite their best efforts, emotion takes over and they are finding themselves under the mistletoe! Who is Annie really? Will Isaiah (called Ike at times) ever know her for who she really is?

The book does starts off at one time period and then goes back in time, which was a little confusing, but it worked itself out in the end. I did enjoy this book as I have enjoyed other books in this series! The history mixed with the fiction is fascinating.  The story is enjoyable and fun.  I was given a free electronic copy of the book for my honest review.  I would recommend this book.

Is God Speaking to Me?: How to Discern His Voice and Direction by Lysa TerKeurst

Is God Speaking to Me?: How to Discern His Voice and Direction Lysa TerKeurst

This "pocket guide" is a great resource of encouragement. Lysa shares a story of God prompting her to give her Bible to a stranger on a plane. She then completes the story full circle of how God used that Bible to bring others to Him.  This book has been revised and updated, which I appreciated.  Lysa refers to not only what she has experienced years ago, but also references experiences that are more recent.

Lysa, in her usual way, shares from the heart and from the Bible how God can and will speak to others.  Readers will enjoy the personal stories and the encouragement shared throughout the book.

I was given a free electronic copy to read for my honest review. I was happy to do so.

These Nameless Things by Shawn Smucker

These Nameless Things by Shawn Smucker is a book that takes you into an intriguing world and keeps you thinking.  This is a style I am not as comfortable with, but for those who enjoy this type of fiction, I have a feeling they will become huge fans. It is definitely more allegorical.  For those how enjoy it, you will not be able to put it down and will be drawn in to the story!

In These Nameless Things, Shawn keeps you thinking and guessing about about Dan, Miho and other characters.  Dan has left the mountain and must help those who have left the mountain. It is a heavy task.

For those who love this type of genre I think you will be hooked. For those not necessarily a fan of this type of fiction you may want to move on.  Shawn tends to have many fans, so it may be work a read just to check it out.

I was given a free copy from the publisher for my honest review, which I was happy to do!

Modern Parents Vintage Values

Wow! This revised version of Modern Parents Vintage Values by Sissy Goff and Melissa Trevathan is a gift!  Modern Parents Vintage Values helps explores some of the issues facing children and teens today, addressing practical ways for parents to begin to address them, offers sound advice for trying to prevent them, and explores insight into children and teens of the world today.

Sissy and Melissa use their vast wisdom from helping children and teens over the years to offer valuable insight for parenting children and teens today.  I often have to decide is this is a pen worthy book? Meaning will I underline in it or not? It took just the introduction for me to realize it was pen worthy!

Modern Parents Vintage Values offers statistics and insight but also the “Sunday Drive” section that provides activities that you can do with your child to help instill character in them today.  I would recommend this book for parents of children ages five to seventeen.  This book offers such practical how to for parents today.

I was given a free copy of this book from the publisher. I am thrilled to recommend this book.

What Momma Left Behind by Cindy K. Sproles

What Momma Left Behind by Cindy K. Sproles is a fiction story set in the Appalachian Mountains in 1877.  Momma leavers her daughter, Worie, to care for orphans she had previously cared for. But why would Momma leave Worie? Worie’s two brothers are nothing but trouble.  Which leaves Worie an orphan and with no siblings to help her.  This gives Worie a unique compassion for those around her.

What Momma Left Behind is an enjoyable historical fiction.  There are unexpected twists and turns along the way.  It does seemingly take on the time period of the Appalachian mountains in the late 1800’s.  This book is a great read, especially if you like historical fiction.

I was given a free copy from the publisher for my honest review. I was happy to do that as well a recommend this book.

Stories That Bind Us by Susie Finkbeiner

Stories That Bind Us by Susie Finkbeiner is a Christian fiction book set in the 1960’s.  It addresses such themes as death, race, mental health and several others.  Betty Sweet has just lost her husband. She is devastated but must pick up the pieces of her life and move on.  There are family ties that are both good and not so good that Betty encounters.

I must admit I haven’t read a book set in the 1960’s before! It was very interesting given the time period. I also enjoyed the themes explored. This is an enjoyable novel.  I think those who lived in the 60’s might enjoy it even more than I did.  The story was good and the book was interesting to read.

I was given a free copy from the publisher for my honest review, which I was happy to do.

Love Riot by Sara Barratt

Love Riot: A Teenage Call to Live with Reckless Abandon for Christ by Sara Barratt is not just for teens! As a 40 something mom of teens, I enjoyed this book, but will also be encouraging my teens to read it!

Sara shares many keen insights in her book, Love Riot.  She shares what she has learned in her twenty years of life, much more than some have learned in so many more years of life. One would say Sara is "wise beyond her years".

I found myself being inspired and learning new lessons through Sara's book.  Sara shares four uncomfortable things that Christians will face: countercultural = counter comfortable, standing apart, choosing integrity, and reaching out.  Sara also writes about the practical. She not only shares the hardships, but offers solutions.  Sara writes about three ways to overcome the uncomfortable: pray, read and quote scripture and step out in faith.  Sara also writes that, "through the Bible we learn God's heart. Through prayer we pour out our own."

Parents, I'd encourage you to read this book to simply understand more of teen culture. Teens (guys and girls), I'd encourage you to read this book as a challenge to your generation.

I was given a free copy of Love Riot from the publisher for my honest review.

The Green Dress by Liz Tolsma

The Green Dress by Liz Tolsma is a part of the True Colors Historical Stories of American Crime series.  I have read some other books from this series and The Green Dress does not disappoint.

Harriet lives in Boston. The Robinson family has taken her in after she fled a horrible engagement arranged by her father.  She occasionally misses her family, but the pain is eased by her sweet best friend, Lizzie. Suddenly Lizzie is ill. Harriet leaves her millinery shop to tend to Lizzie.  Lizzie passes a horrible death. This has been yet another death in the Robinson household. So many in so few years. What is going on? Lizzie encounters the town doctor and confides in him for help and to help find the cause of all the deaths. Who will tend to the others in the Robinson household? Is Harriet willing to give everything she has worked for to those who took her in when she was weakest?

This book is enthralling and will hold your attention. It has all the elements - history, mystery, romance and drama. It is also based on a true historical event.  I throughly enjoyed The Green Dress and would recommend it.

I  received a complimentary digital copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

The Edge of Everywhen ~ Guest Review!

The Edge of Everywhen is a novel by A. S. Mackey. This is her first book for tweens/teens. For this review I allowed my eleven year old to read & review the book.

The Edge to Everywhen is about a 13 year-old girl named Piper and her autistic brother, Phoenix. Piper and Phoenix are sent to live with their aunt after their mother dies and their father is sent overseas to do construction work.

Piper explores this new place and finds a book, Novus Fabula. Read this book to find out what happens!!! I felt like I was with the characters in the story. The book really drew me in. I definitely think you should read this book. I give it five stars.

I will say my eleven year-old was hooked and could not put the book down. She continually told me how much she enjoyed this book! A great fantasy read. Kids will delight in reading this book. Great for summer reading!!!

Shifting Shadows by Herman Mendoza

Shifting Shadows by Herman Mendoza is a MUST READ!  I have reviewed lots of books and normally do not say that, BUT...this book is great!  I read the book in two days!

Herman Mendoza grew up in the streets of New York City in a home that never went to church, nor shared much about their faith. Herman was always looking for something more, but never seemed to be able to find it.  He tried drugs, spent time in prison, and then landed the job of a lifetime, moving drugs through one of the largest cartels in America.  Along the way, he met a very special young lady, Alexandra.

This book shares Herman's story (and Alexandra's).  It will captivate you, draw you in, and most importantly encourage you to evaluate your ministry.  It is a life changing story that needs to be shared. I am still amazed at how Herman came to salvation and changed his life. I would encourage you to read this, pass it on and allow yourself to be challenged.

I was given a free copy from the publisher for my honest review.  All thoughts are opinions are my own! I highly recommend this book!

Florence Nightingale ~ Women of Courage

Florence Nightingale ~ Compassionate Care for People Who Need It Most is a historical collection of the life of Florence Nightingale and her service to others. This book is a compilation of Florence's (or Flo's) journals, letters and other historical documents.  It details Flo's growing up years, her years of service and everything in between.

While this book is a great resource, it is at times difficult to follow and a bit "choppy".  Nonetheless, the reader is gifted the life and upbringing of Florence along with those who influenced her and shaped her into who she came to be.  There is also much Biblical insight as Flo studied and wrestled through her calling and Biblical passages.

I was given a free copy from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

How Are You Praying for Your Kids?

Over the last few weeks {during COVID-19} I've learned new ways to pray for my kids! I compiled a list. It's by no means complete. I'd love to know how you are praying for your kids. Or how to organize this overwhelming list to make it manageable.  I collected these ideas from a variety of resources, but need to give credit to Lee Nienhuis' books Brave Moms Brave Kids and Countercultural Parenting for many of the ideas (the bottom of the list is directly from Countercultural Parenting)!

Let me know if you want a printable list.

They would know their ministry and calling.
Kindness
Compassion
Good friendships that will point them toward God and for them to point others to God
God will be visible to them & that in some way each day they will clearly see him whether it's in something that happens,, someone that they come in contact with, something they may see.
Development of strong integrity and character
That they will have hearts that are fully committed to God.
For them to know God and make Him known.
To have a bold faith in their generation to make Christ know no matter the cost.
To be pure in body, mind and spirit.
For them to come to know Christ as their Savior at a young age.
To grow in stature with God and men.
Feet to be swift to run from sin, legs that support his/her walk with the Lord, His/her spouse and their upbringing, eyes that look for ways to bring glory to the Lord
That they take time to sit at Jesus feet, so they continue to grow in His wisdom, love, & understanding.
To trust in God's plans for their life & to have hope in all circumstances
For their protection both physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
They will love the Lord.
That they will seek His will.
I pray they will have the courage to stand strong for God.
That He will send them spouses who are strong in the Lord and will not only love them, but TREASURE them always!
I pray that nothing I have done, said, or neglected to say will ever keep them from living for God.
May they not have spiritual amnesia and remember how God has worked.
May their own their faith and not rely on their parents.
May they get caught in their sin.
May they be strong, faithful, and brave.
May they be mighty warriors for the kingdom of God.
Obedient to Christ
Passion for His Word
Make wise choices
Have courage
May they know God and not rest on someone else’s faith
My they know scripture
Love and fascination for God
Not to be complacent
May they find their identity in Christ
May they find their confidence in Christ
May they be prayer warriors
May they flee temptation
May they hear the Holy Spirit
May they know their value in Christ

Standoff by Patricia Bradley

Standoff by Patricia Bradley is a thrilling novel.  Brooke has recently become a law officer. Luke, who left her years ago to attend the Naval Academy and never returned, or even said goodbye is back in town.  He just left town with no respect for her feelings nor the romance they shared.  As Brooke starts her new career, just after her father is murdered, she is overwhelmed and determined to discover who killed her father. Who can you trust in the department and who is feeding the drug cartel their information?

While I must admit, it was hard to follow all of the characters in this story, it was a good read. The thrilled pace keep you wondering what is next and who is responsible for the murders! It is a plot twisting enjoyable novel!

Called Out by Paula Faris

Called Out by Paula Faros offers a candid look at Paula's life and all that she did to improve her career on the View and as a reporter for ABC news.  Paula shares her upbringing, including her parents turn to faith found in a church community, her journey to Cedarville University, and her climb as a top news reporter. Paula wanted to have it all no matter what the cost. Until. Paula finally realized there was a cost and shares her journey of faith and realizing what her calling really is.

This book is insightful.  It offers much wisdom to the reader, especially with Paula's driven attitude and quest for achievement.  Perhaps it can be summed up on page 178. Paula writes, "I came to a simple conclusion: Something is fundamentally broken with our society when we care so much about success that we slam preschoolers with questions of vocation and fifth-graders are considering resume builders for college admissions."

While this book is about Paula's Christian faith, she does try to include all faiths, maybe to a fault. I did enjoy this book and was given a free copy from the publisher for my honest review.

My Heart Ever His {Prayers for Women} by Barbara Rainey

My Heart Ever His {Prayers for Women} by Barbara Rainey is a beautiful collection of prayers for women.  Barbara shares wonderfully written prayers that reflect all stages of a woman's life. As an older women, Barbara has lived through many stages and touches on many of them in her book.  These prayers offer hope and come from a strong Biblical basis. Some are simply scripture quoted.

My Heart Ever His is a great gift for Mother's Day.  It can be an encouragement for women.  Barbara shares not only the prayers, but on some pages the story behind the prayers.  I like that it offered wisdom and words that you may not have thought about praying.

This book is a great encouragement. I was given a free copy from the publisher for my honest review, which I was happy to do!

The Traitor's Pawn by Lisa Harris

The Traitor's Pawn by Lisa Harris is a face paced fiction novel that is an enjoyable read!  Aubrey Grey is on an estate with her father like figure, a former senator.  Just as Aubrey and the former Senator start to enjoy the morning, the Senator is shot and next thing you know Aubrey is kidnapped. FBI Agent Jack Shannon arrives to investigate the case.  This is no longer a shooting investigation, but has now turned into a case involving shared intel with foreign countries.  Whatever happened between childhood best friends, Aubrey and Jack? When Aubrey started dating Jack's brother their relationship changed. Can it be salvaged after all these year?

I did enjoy reading The Traitor's Pawn by Lisa Harris.  This book was rich in characters, kept you on the edge of your seat, and was overall great fiction.  The main character of Aubrey explored past hurts caused by her father and needed to look at forgiveness.  I enjoyed the themes in the book.

I was given a free copy from the publisher for my honest review, which I was happy to do.

Big and Little Activity Devotional by Rachel Swanson

The Big and Little Activity Devotional by Rachel Swanson is a super fabulous activity book for children ages 5-12.  It offers many pages filled with countless activities.  Not only are the activities rich with content, but there are also a variety of pages.

If you hold the book and open it one direction, you will see pages for younger children. Then if you flip the book over you will see pages for older children! How clever!  Pages range from word puzzles, mazes, trace and color, how to draw, word searches, coloring pages and so much more.

This is a great resource for families of children that span ages, or can be used with a younger child and then used again when they are older.

The listed scripture passage and short devotional can be used with both the younger and older children.  This book offers great fun for children to pass the time and still learn a valuable

lesson at the same time!

Countercultural Parenting: Building Character in a World of Compromise by Lee Nienhuis

I had the privilege of reading Lee Nienhuis' second book, Countercultural Parenting: Building Character in a World of Compromise.  In a nutshell: run to get this valuable parenting book!

Lee's first book, Brave Mom Brave Kids, was an amazing parenting book, and Countercultural Parenting simply builds on the momentum of that book. However, you don't need to read the first book to appreciate the wisdom in Countercultural Parenting!

Lee offers amazing knowledge and insight into raising children that are NOT the status quo.  If you are looking for HOPE in an honest form, Lee offers that in Countercultural Parenting.  As Lee states, "Is it crazy to imagine that we could raise children who are godly, who will grow into righteous leaders? Could they become men and women who choose for the earliest age to be people of character, steadfast and immovable?"

Lee then follows through with the how to of parenting and raising children who go against the culture! In Countercultural Parenting, Lee shares the insight that not only helps you propel yourself toward raising godly children but also the insight to help you as a parent who does not follow the status quo.

Lee offers a fresh (and rich) look at Biblical characters who can serve as role models and examples for parents and for our children.  I highlighted so many passages in this book!  I can't wait to share this with friends as an encouragement in their parenting journey.

No longer can we raise children who are part of the status quo of society. It is clear it is no longer working.  We need to stand up and raise countercultural children. Lee's book is a great resource for just that.

I was given a free copy of Countercultural Parenting: Building Character in a World of Compromise by Lee Nienhuis for my honest review. I was thrilled to do this and would highly recommend this book!

Homemade Play Dough

When my {now 21 year old son} was in preschool, his teacher asked for families to make play dough to send into the classroom!  So here I am, 16 years later sharing this great recipe during the COVID-19 outbreak.  I hope that this will help keep your little ones (and you!) occupied, if even for just a little time. Oh mamas, it IS hard to be home with the little ones all day!

Best part of this play dough - although I wouldn't recommend, it is edible because all of the ingredients are edible. So if little ones tend to want to put everything in their mouths, they can enjoy!

1 cup flour
1/4 cup salt
2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 cup water
1 TBS vegetable oil
1 pack unsweetened Kool Aid (for color, optional)
Add dry ingredients to sauce pan. Stir. Add water and oil.Stir over medium-low heat until mixtures becomes quite thick & resembles the consistency of play dough (about 15 minutes). Remove from heat and place dough on cookie sheet or wax paper to cool completely.Once cool, knead until smooth.Store in a covered container.

(Hint to Print. Click on graphic. Open Graphic in a new tab, print graphic.)
Other recipes you may enjoy: White chocolate mix, pancake and waffle mix, taco dip, chicken corn soup. And how to organize all those recipes!

The Happy Camper by Melody Carlson

The Happy Camper by Melody Carlson is a delightful fiction story, an enjoyable book! This is actually the first book I read by the award winning author!

Dillion has quite the life. Well, maybe. She has a decent job, a boyfriend and an ok life with her roommates. When her boyfriend is late to dinner again, and continually takes her for granted she knows its time for a change. Then her boss implores her to come in to work on a Saturday, again.  This is the last straw. Dillion does it! She packs up and heads to her beloved Grandpa's farm. However, surprise, her mother is there. Sadly, she has never gotten along well with her free spirited mother.  And her mother starts telling Dillion how to run her life and always takes Dillion for granted!

However, there is this gentleman who works at the hardware store.  And enter a beloved vintage camper gifted to Dillion.

The Happy Camper is a sweet story.  It is fun, delightful and engaging. A cheerful read!  You will enjoy the story of 34 year old Dillion and her transplanted life back to simpler times on the family farm.

Made to Move Mountains by Kristen Welch

When I am asked to write a review, I am always asked to be honest. Sometimes reviews are just hard to write.  Bottom line: Did I enjoy this book? Yes and No.  Perhaps it was because I was reading this book at the height of COVID19.  Perhaps it's just the book. I'm not sure.

I had read Kristen Welch's blog a LONG time ago, before she was as influential as she is now. Perhaps it was simply a different time.  This was the first book I had read of hers.

In Made to Move Mountains, Kristen shares some of what is on her current blog, the story of Mercy House (her organization to free pregnant women from slavery), fair trade and helping immigrants.  She also dabbles in what she has shared in the past concerning her marriage, and some of her family life.  Kristen does share that this book was a hard book to write, and I don't expect her to share all of her secrets, but when as author writes that she is going to through trials, but cannot explain more, I relate it to telling someone, I have a secret but I'm not telling you.  In that case, don't even bring it up.

The focus of Made to Move Mountains is just that. The mountains in Kristen's life and how God has and will move them.  Or she will climb them. Perhaps the most impactful writing for me, was when Kristen shared sending her daughter off to college and the affect that had on her, and the wisdom and insight that Kristen gained as a mother through that experience.

I'm not sure I've read a book before that quotes more authors than this book. There was even an author quoted within another author quote. Kristen goes from quoting Tim Keller to John Piper to Joel Osteen.  (All within a few pages!)

Bottom line: Would I recommend this book? Yes and No. I would encourage you to read this for yourself and decide about Made to Move Mountains. Was there thought provoking material? Yes. Did it offer hope? Sometimes. Some of Made to Move Mountains was more focused on Kristen's mountains than moving them.

I would  encourage you to read the book for yourself and decide. I was given a free copy from the publisher for my honest review.

Little Words Matter Jumbo Coloring Book ~ from B&H Kids

Little Words Matter Jumbo Coloring Book from B&H Kids!

This delightful coloring book has many opportunities and simple pages for young children to color. I would recommend this for children ages 2 to 5. It begins with coloring pages that share Jesus Loves Me. It then teaches letters and offers pages showing children how to trace their letters. The Little Words Matter Jumbo Coloring book then goes through different animals that children can color and does reinforce various activities such as alike and different. There are also matching activities, color words and activities, number word and activities, Bible characters, shapes, shape activities and beginning letter sounds. As you can see it is filled with rich learning pages!

This book offers many different options for young children. The only drawback is that for a few pictures it’s hard to distinguish what the picture stands for. For example, the page where you two are to identify what starts with the letter "I" and "J", there is a picture of a girl jumping, some jelly, and a soldier.

Overall the Little Words Matter Jumbo Coloring Book is a fantastic resource for little ones. It is big, so it does offer endless hours for coloring!

I was given a free copy to review from the publishers. All opinions are my own.
